This page serves as a guide for anyone who wants to connect to the Yoshi’s Corner IRC channel. If you just want the hard details, skip to the end of this page.
First off, theres the easy way out of using the Java Chat link if you don’t want to download an IRC client, such as XChat or mIRC. XChat is free, but mIRC will nag you with a registration screen whenever you open the program which you can safely ignore, unless you want to pay for a registered copy. Don’t worry about the 30 day limit, it will still work after that.
For those of you wanting to live dangerously, a guide for XChat follows. Obviously you’ll need to download XChat from the link up there if you haven’t already. It’s OK, I can wait. Downloaded it? OK then.
After letting the installer do its thing, launch XChat and you should see a screen like this:
Obviously your screen won’t have all my details on it. As far as I can remember, XChat already has a list of servers in there but I removed them as I never use any of them. Ignore those for now and click on “Add.” A line named “New Network” will appear ready to be renamed. Name it whatever you want, although in case you keep the default server list, name it something memorable so you can find it later. In our case its “anbraxas.net”.
Now click ”Edit”, and the next screen will appear:
Basically you want your setup to look like mine. There should already be a line named “newserver/6667″. Change this to “irc.anbraxas.net/6667″. Keep the “/6667″ on the end otherwise you won’t be able to connect, and that is a Bad Thing. You will probably want to check “Auto connect to this network on startup” for conveniences sake instead of trawling through the server list each time you load XChat. Make sure to enter “#yc” in “Channels to join” otherwise you’ll be talking to yourself in the server messages window. You can ignore the rest, unless you decide to register your nickname which will mean that you are the only one who can use your nickname. This also gives you other benefits such as getting auto-voice when you join #yc. That will be covered at the end of this guide.
If everything is correct, close the server details window, select “anbraxas.net” and click “Connect”. After a few seconds you should connect if everything has gone to plan, providing nothing has messed up (let me know if you followed this guide and something goes wrong.). Once that has happened, you should see a screen that looks similar to this (but not thumbnail sized):
Feel free to lurk for a bit and see whats going on for a while, or just dive in and introduce yourself. Either way we’re sure you’ll enjoy it.
Now, onto the business of registering your nickname. If you decide to register your nickname, in either a channel or the server messages window, type the following replacing [password] with your choice of password, and [email] with an email address that a request for a forgotten password can be sent to:
/nickserv register [password] [email]
Remember your password, you can’t actually use your nickname if you don’t identify to nickserv. But, put your password in the “Nickserv password” box as shown in the second screenshot, and you don’t have to worry about it anymore as XChat will take care of identifying automatically. Alternatively you can do this manually in XChat by typing /id [password] in any channel or the server messages window. If need be, you can access nickservs help service with /nickserv help.
That’s basically it for this guide, but it should be updated whenever I have something useful to add to it.

For those of you who just want hard details, moot delivers:

Are you trying to secretly persuade people into using X-Chat rather than mIRC?
